Program Chair Lynn Fugate introduced this week’s Teacher of the Year program.
The recipient for elementary schools, Mr. Michael Rogers from Maynard Elementary was introduced by his principal, Ms. Foster as very professional and someone who cares for both students and colleagues, and has a beautiful singing voice. As a special Ed. Teacher, Mr. Rogers focuses on accommodations to begin a “regular” curriculum. Mr. Rogers shared some of his 30 years’ experience, mostly in special Ed… His motto is “every child CAN”, even if you have to look for different avenues for success. Mr. Rogers also reminded everyone that we all must be passionate about education for ALL children.
In the middle school category, Melissa Glover, principal of Gresham Middle, introduced Dr. Amy Elder as the recipient of this year’s middle school award. Dr. Elder described her classroom as a place of safety and shared that teachers answer to a higher calling. She shared that she started her 18-year career teaching kindergarten and blessed those who teach that grade level.
Dr. Elder shared some humorous quotes from students including one who referred to her as “SASSY”. She also shared her thoughts on how she sees the child she once was and how teachers impacted her. She asked her students to describe “unconditional love” and put the answers on her Butterfly Wall. Dr. Elder said when we go through hardship, you can either heal or destroy, she chooses to heal.
